CHESTER, Pa. — Chris Pontius scored two goals — both assisted by Ilsinho — to lift the Philadelphia Union to a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in a Round of 16 US Open Cup match Wednesday night at Talen Energy Stadium.
Mike Grella opened the scoring in the 17th minute for the visiting Red Bulls, who completely dominated the first half as they looked to avenge a wild loss to Philly in last year’s Open Cup. But Pontius scored in the 55th and 60th minute for his seventh and eight goals in all competitions this season to spur the comeback, the second of which came after a stirring run from Tranquillo Barnetta and a perfect cross from Ilsinho.
The Union, who made it to the USOC final in each of the last two years, held the Red Bulls’ offense in check the rest of the way to advance to the quarterfinals. But the game didn't end without some fireworks as Union assistant coach Mike Sorber and Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch were both ejected in the waning minutes, with Marsch throwing a couple of balls in front of the Union bench on his way out.
The Union advance to the quarterfinals and next pay a visit the New England Revolution on July 19 or 20.
