Calabar’ guides Zesco United to league victory

The Harambee Stars’ defender scored the all important goal in the 50th minute to earn his side maximum points and was voted man of the match
Zesco United recorded the 16th win of the season beating Konkola Blades 1-0 in a Super Division match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday.
Former Gor Mahia and Kenyan defender David ‘Calabar” Owino scored the all important goal in the 50th minute. ‘Calabar’, who is part of Harambee Stars side that will face Zambia in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Nairobi on Sunday, nodded in a Cletus Chama free-kick and was voted man of the match.
Zesco United have collected 52 points, seven better than Power Dynamos, who beat Nkana 2-1 on Saturday. According to the club's official website, both teams missed a myriad of scoring chances in the fixture.
Jackson Mwanza free-kick was blocked by Blades defenders in the 20th minute and a minute later Chama was denied by the visitors. ‘Sharp’ Blades striker Moses Phiri shot straight at goalkeeper Jacob Banda in the 22nd minute.
In the second half, Zesco United coach George Lwandamina introduced John Ching’andu, Maybin Mwaba and Jonas Sakuwaha for Justin Zulu, Mwape Mwelwa and Jackson Mwanza respectively but goals eluded the reigning champions.

Bandari1-2Gor Mahia

He has built a knack for scoring crucial goals for the Kenyan Premier League champions and his brace against Bandari on Saturday means that Gor Mahia could be crowned champions if they win their next fixture. Gor Mahia are currently at the top of the log on 62 points with second placed Ulinzi Stars trailing with 18 points. Overall, Walusimbi has had a tremendous season this year and was key in helping Gor Mahia reach the finals of Cecafa Kagame Cup in Tanzania.
Congratulations to Godfrey Walusimbi Goal.com's 54th Kenya Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention
Meshack Karani -  Chemelil
He has been one of the most underrated strikers on the local scene but still scores goals and remains surprisingly consistent. When he was at Mathare United two years ago, Karani remained influential. In a season that Chemelil has struggled, he has stood out pretty well with crucial goals as when he scored a brace against AFC Leopards on Saturday. That win once again proved the dominance Chemelil Sugar have always had against Leopards. However, despite picking maximum points, the sugar millers still have a long way to go and will be hoping that Karani continues to score goals.
Andrew Ssekayombya - Sony
That Sony Sugar have made an amazing turn around in the second leg of the league is not in doubt. At one point, the team went more than five matches without a win leading to the exit of former coach Zedekiah Otieno. But even at their lowest, they had a number of players, who stood out and one of them is Ugandan Ssekayombya and can easily be pointed out as one of the key players, who have stood out in their second leg performance. The Ugandan always gives his best and was in his element on Sunday scoring a last minute goal as his side edged out Mathare United 2-1 at home.
Dunson Kago - Tusker
Despite their poor performance in the last one month, some players in the Tusker squad continue to stand out. One of this is Kago, who has cemented his place in the starting line-up despite the fact that he is a new comer in the team. Watching Kago play against Ushuru in a barren draw result last Friday at Nyayo Stadium, he was very impressive and created a number of scoring chances. As Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi explained, his forwards are suffering from low confidence and it the reason they were not able to finish off the numerous chances they have been creating recently in most of their matches.
Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Goal.com Kenya, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.
You can also help us choose a worthy recipient of the weekly accolade by leaving your nominations and comments. Your suggestions will be taken into consideration.
It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
