ampines Rovers have moved to sign Rodrigo Tosi on the eve of the league’s transfer window deadline day.
Tosi will be replacing Fabrice Noel, who is negotiating a mutual termination of his contract with Tampines and is expected to be deregistered.
The Stags’ latest signing is not unknown to fans, as he was the 2014 Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League top scorer. Tosi was released by Brunei DPMM following the conclusion of the 2014 season and had returned to his native country Brazil to link up with second division club Parana Clube.
While his contract was originally due to expire in May, he agreed a mutual termination of his contract with the club after being notified of Tampines’ interest.
Tosi arrived in Singapore on Monday morning, and has been training with Tampines at the Jurong West Stadium since Tuesday.
Tosi, who was also a nominee for last year’s Player of the Year award, has passed his medical test. However, he will have to pass the compulsory 2.4km fitness test in order to register for the S.League.
Tampines coach V. Sundramoorthy is confident that the signing of the 32-year-old will be a great boost for the club.
“You know the quality of Tosi, everyone has seen him in action last year. He will be a great inclusion to the team,” Sundram said.
“We need his presence upfront; we have lacked someone who can hold up the play and score goals.”
After four games played this year, Tampines have only scored four goals. Observers have noted that the pre-season favourites are struggling to convert their chances, and that played a huge role in Tampines’ 2-0 loss to Home United earlier in March.
Sundram believes that having Tosi in the team will definitely be an instant fix for his team’s goal-scoring woes.
“Definitely he will be a great help,” Sundram stated.
“His record speaks for himself. Basically, with him playing in the box, he will definitely get us the goals if we get the ball to him inside.”
However, the former Singapore international is wary of over-relying on the Brazilian.
“He’s only one part of the team,” Sundram explained.
“The rest of the players still have to work hard to complement him.
“With Mateo injured, we still have Indra (Sahdan) and Alam (Noh Alam Shah) helping out, it’s all about the squad that can bring us long term success.
“That way, then can we have a team which can go out and win something.”
